White-Hat Link Building in 2026: What Still Works

AI Optimisation Agency · 28 August 2026

Link building has a bad reputation, and often deserves it. Bought links, private blog networks and mass guest posting all still exist, and all still carry risk. The good news is that the tactics which work best are also the safest.

Start with a link gap analysis

Pull the referring domains of your three closest competitors and find the sites that link to two or more of them but not to you. That list is your most realistic target set, because those publishers have already shown they will cover your topic.

Build something worth linking to

Links follow value. In practice that usually means one of:

  • Original data. A survey, an index, or an analysis of numbers nobody else has published.
  • A genuinely useful tool. Calculators and checkers earn links for years.
  • Definitive guides. Long-lived reference content on a topic you can own.

Outreach that gets replies

Personalise the first line and make it obvious you have read their work. Keep it under 120 words. Say clearly what you are offering and why it fits their audience. Follow up once, politely, after five working days.

What to avoid

  • Paid link placements and "sponsored" posts that pass authority
  • Link exchange schemes
  • Directory blasts and low-quality guest posts
  • Anchor-text over-optimisation

How many links do you need?

Fewer than you think, if they are relevant. Ten links from genuinely authoritative, topically relevant sites will usually outperform two hundred from irrelevant ones.

Measuring success

Track referring domains rather than raw link counts, watch the movement of the pages you are pointing links at, and give it time. Authority compounds over months, not days.
