What Is Digital PR? A Practical Guide for UK Brands

AI Optimisation Agency · 21 August 2026

Digital PR is the practice of earning coverage, links and brand mentions from online publications, journalists and creators. It borrows the relationship-building of traditional PR and points it at outcomes search engines care about: authority, relevance and trust.

Why digital PR matters for search

Google has always used links as a signal of trust. AI search assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity go further: they cite sources, and the sources they cite tend to be the brands mentioned most consistently across credible publications.

That means a single national placement can do three jobs at once:

  • Send referral traffic from an audience that already reads that publication
  • Pass authority to your site through an editorially given link
  • Create a citable mention that AI systems can pick up when summarising your market

What a digital PR campaign actually involves

  1. Research. Identify the questions your buyers and journalists in your sector are already asking.
  2. Story development. Turn proprietary data, surveys or expert commentary into an angle a journalist wants.
  3. Media list building. Match the story to specific writers on specific desks, not a generic blast.
  4. Outreach. Short, personalised pitches, followed up properly.
  5. Reporting. Placements, links, referring domains, and the authority gained.

How to measure it

Vanity metrics like "pieces of coverage" are a weak proxy. Track instead:

  • Referring domains gained, and their topical relevance
  • Branded search volume before and after a campaign
  • Organic visibility for the commercial terms you care about
  • Mentions and citations inside AI answers

Common mistakes

Sending press releases with nothing new in them. Pitching journalists who never cover your sector. Chasing volume over relevance. Buying links dressed up as PR is a risk, not a strategy.

Getting started

Start with one strong data-led story and a tightly targeted list of 30 to 50 journalists. A focused campaign beats a scattergun one nearly every time.
