How to Get Your Brand Cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Search

AI Optimisation Agency · 2 September 2026

People increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews rather than scrolling a results page. Those systems answer directly and cite a handful of sources. If you are not one of them, you are invisible at the exact moment someone is deciding.

How AI assistants choose sources

Broadly, they favour content that is:

  • Clear and extractable. Direct answers, sensible headings, short paragraphs.
  • Well-attributed. Named authors, dates, and sources you can check.
  • Corroborated. Your claims repeated on other credible sites.
  • Structurally understandable. Clean markup and schema that identify what a page is about.

A practical checklist

  1. Answer the question in the first paragraph. Then expand. Do not bury the answer under 600 words of preamble.
  2. Use question-shaped headings. They map neatly onto the way people prompt.
  3. Add structured data. Article, Organization, Product and Breadcrumb schema help machines identify entities.
  4. Establish your entity. Consistent name, description and details everywhere your brand appears.
  5. Earn third-party mentions. Digital PR is the most reliable way to get corroborated.
  6. Keep content current. Show a real last-updated date and mean it.

Measuring AI visibility

Traditional rank trackers do not cover this well. Prompt the major assistants with the questions your buyers ask, log which brands get cited, and repeat monthly. Watch for referral traffic from AI hosts in your analytics too.

Where most brands go wrong

They optimise for keywords and ignore entities. They publish thin content that restates what everyone else says, so there is no reason to cite it. And they have no third-party corroboration at all.

Fix those three and AI visibility usually follows.
